I moved out to a canyon in the sticks, grew my hair even longer and I had a nice quieter existence. In the process, I got married, had a kid and did everything but be in a band.
It was important for me to get away and enjoy songwriting again and write for the right reasons. Better that than writing for a major label that wanted another 'Dancing in the Moonlight'.
Did you ever care about the hard time the band got from the music press? We just came out with music that we loved making. At that time we were influenced by '70s rock music and we just released what we were into.
We were never cutting edge or trendy and I don't think we wanted to be. The first album, people just liked the song. If you were super duper trendy, you wouldn't buy Onka's Big Moka , but there were enough people who did!
Do you still enjoy playing 'Dancing in the Moonlight;? It's made playing that song bearable. We are all surprised by the longevity of that song and love it or hate it, we can't get away from the fact what a big hit it is.
We play it in the gigs now in-between the new songs and people still love it. It's a big hit and we'll always have to play it.
It's a mental song and I can never really get my head around it. There's something in there that makes lots of people happy and lots of people unhappy.
It's one of those weird ones. Where's the weirdest place you've heard the track? I remember going on holiday after we'd been on tour for something ridiculous like 18 months.
I went to Bali and it was in this village in the middle of Bali and 'Dancing' came on. I had travelled thousands of miles, they almost didn't have electricity there and they were playing 'Dancing in the Moonlight'.
I couldn't escape it. The album Only Human is out now on toploaderofficial. Type keyword s to search. You may be able to find more information about this and similar content at piano.

Claire's departure was a shock as she had impressed everyone with her version of the ' Queen Of The Night '. So who do you want to win?
I am [going more. It seems Joe Washbourn , Toploader singer and Popstar to Operastar contestant, has set his sights on becoming a wedding singer.
I might sling a bit in the next album! Andy Bell became the latest contestant to be voted off ' Popstar to Operastar ' last night However, the year-old musician admitted he had suffered a "complete blank" due to the pressure of being in the sing-off.
Speaking to host Myleene Klass , he said: "It's not like doing a gig and I had a. The highly regarded operatic duo Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon return to help the five remaining popstars to hit the high notes.
I wanted to touch again on the other two albums. I think we just captured something quite special there, and we were quite lucky to do it.
That one captured a moment in time for us. And is there anything on there where, looking back with the benefit of hindsight, you can see where you wanted to go with the band?
That sounds like a great song. Laughs Maybe, anyway. But there are still some great tracks. I know Toploader played with Robbie Williams and Bon Jovi, but who would you say is the strangest artist you guys have been paired with over the years?
Good question. The strangest…? We went on a festival after them once, and that was kind of a weird pairing.
This feels a bit strange. Do you perceive yourselves as Britpop? Not really. I think we came after Britpop, really. I think we were part of something a bit refreshing after Britpop, really.
That was incredible. And you watch it back now, and we look like rabbits in the headlights. On the actual grounds of Buckingham Palace, which is bizarre.
That was televised to probably a hundred or two hundred million people. So, yeah, that was kind of weird. Early on, I think it was Paul Weller. I mean, he started coming to gigs really early on, before we even had a record deal, and had us supporting him on tour.
And none of the songs we were playing then ended up on our first album. What was your reaction when you saw that they were releasing The Best of Toploader?
Laughs Really odd. So that was kind of weird. Does it ever feel like an albatross that you guys are most remembered for a cover song?
Laughs Over in the U. And if you love it, great, but if you hate it…? Speaking of the U.In ihrem Heimatland haben die Festivalbooker bereits euphorisch reagiert. Darüber hinaus tourten sie unter anderem mit Bon Jovi, Robbie Williams und Paul Weller und waren zudem die letzte Band, die im alten Wembleystadion spielte.
I think as you get a little older you are into new challenges and it definitely is that. I've thoroughly enjoyed what I've done so far.
I'm enjoying the getting into the character part. That's something I don't do with the band and I'm liking that as much as the singing.
Did you know anything about opera before you started? Only the three tenors and Nessun Dorma and the football-y songs. The same stuff everyone knows about it really.
But every week you get given something and this week's is something I'd never heard of before, but it's a great piece of music.
Is there anything useful in the opera training that you are using with Toploader? The breathing and not straining your voice too much.
They are not crossing over at the moment - thank God! But there are some techniques that might save me on a tour with the old sore throats.
Rolando said that he loved your hair. Do you think that will work to your advantage? I bumped into him in hair and make-up and there's definitely a similarity there.
He's had his hair cut this year and I think last time it was much more bouffant. I think somewhere along the line we could be long lost brothers.
Have your bandmates been ribbing you? But they came along last week and were all really proud. It was like having your brothers there supporting you.
They were all, 'Jesus, you did really good'. Even our drummer Rob, who is a hard man to please, even he came up and shook my hand and said I did a great job.
They were all quite proud in a brotherly way. It's been pretty much ten years since the last Toploader album. What the hell were you guys up to?
We still got on, but we didn't think after Magic Hotel it was the right time to make any more albums. We all met up again at Dan's stag do, there was a lot of water under the bridge and this time around it's all been lovely.
First time, there was a lot of success, we were young and didn't really know how to handle it. I mean, we had quite a lot of people perceive that we had a lot of success overnight.
Obviously, for us, it was a little more progressive than that. We kind of started out, like all bands do, in little vans, going up and down the UK.
We kind of imploded. So what were you doing in the interim? Did you go back to, God forbid, a day job? Were you still working in music in any capacity?
Yeah, absolutely. We were lucky enough to sort of walk away with a couple of sheckles in our pockets, and…I cut all my hair off.
I just was up there writing music and playing music and did a couple of scores for films. I just wrote and wrote and wrote and wrote, and I absolutely loved it.
My wife and I just had a great time up there. It was nice to sit down and have the visuals in front of you and have to fill up this 30 seconds and you have to reach this mark on this point.
I really enjoyed that. It was nice. Having branched out into that music capacity, was it hard to find the Toploader groove again when you finally got back to the band?
Funnily enough, not really. And then one of the members left because he had other commitments, and I think as soon as we became a four-piece, that whole kind of dynamic of the group changed, and the sound changed, and suddenly we had lots more space.
So, no, once we started playing, it was easy to get back into writing for the band again. Was that an intentional change or just the evolution of the band?
I think kind of both, really. Laughs You know, I think it was a very natural thing. A few years later, different things have happened in life, and…I think we just wanted to make something a little more serious, with a little bit more weight to it, and I just think that, as you grow older, you become a little bit more…worldly?
Whatever you want to call it, but all the good things that make good records, hopefully. Yeah, it is true, actually. And they obviously went on to do incredible things.
We also did a Rolling Stone tour in Germany where Coldplay supported us at first…and then, obviously, things got flipped on their head a little bit.
Laughs So, yeah, we came out at a good time for music. I think… Hesitates I mean, obviously, we were lucky to have the success that we had, really.
And when it came to making a second album, I think we were just completely burnt out and completely run out of juices, creatively.
And I think with what worked for those bands, and for lots of bands, really, the clever thing to do is to take whatever success you had with the first album, go away, and evaluate it.
In they released a second album, Magic Hotel. The album was poorly received by critics and failed to match the success of the first.
Because of the negative reception and the album not meeting the same success as the first, they were dropped by S2.
Not long after that, the band broke up in Six years later, Toploader reformed and signed a one-album deal with Underdogs Music for their third album, which was released in June The album's title was Only Human , and the first single from it, "Never Stop Wondering", was released on 14 March In May , they played at Lakefest festival.
During the band agreed to act as patrons for a UK-based children's charity called 'Time Is Precious'. The song is included on a four-song EP.
On 12 May , Toploader's fourth album, Seeing Stars was released. The album was crowdfunded using an online direct-to-fan music platform called PledgeMusic.
One year before the album's release, Matt Knight left the band. Jordan Smith from The Xcerts has occasionally performed live with Toploader, but isn't a full time member.
